Chaya Czernowin’s ‘Wintersongs’ at Miller Theater

“Pick up a plastic comb.” So instructs the penultimate page of Chaya Czernowin’s “Wintersongs V: Forgotten Light,” which received its premiere during her entrancing Composer Portrait at the Miller Theater at Columbia University on Thursday. Each member of the piece’s two septets, one octet and two singers “thinks of a melody/pop song that they know and plays the rhythm of that melody” by scraping the comb’s teeth.

A quirky read on paper, it proves an eerily disturbing but moving end to Ms. Czernowin’s brutal series of songs without words.

Welcome!

The Harvard University Department of Music is devoted to the study and practice of music, and exists to provide a first-rate musical education that gives students advanced skills in music as well as knowledge of music history and repertory. Collaboration, creativity, scholarship and musicianship all figure prominently in the department's mission and practice. We offer both an undergraduate and a graduate program. Undergraduates receive an AB with a concentration in music, and graduate students complete a PhD program in historical musicology, ethnomusicology, theory, or composition. There is also a small AM degree program in Performance Practice, and a dual-degree (AB/MM) program that is a collaboration with New England Conservatory. The Music Department sponsors numerous concerts, colloquia, lectures and special music events each month, which are free to students and the public. [Read MORE]
